Nan Madol Ruins
Nan Madol Runs in located on Temwen Island in Madolenihmw.
Nan Madol Ruins is one of the beautiful sites here on Pohnpei. Let me tell you the history or story behind those rocks. If you have ever heard of the story about Nan Madol and it is different from the story I tell you, this is because our history as been told orally, from generation to generation.
History has been told from elders or grandparents to grandchildren. So information regarding our history changes overtime. Because our forefathers belief history is erased if we talk about it, so they leave out somethings and let it die with them.
Nan Madol was a Kingdom for ruling elites caste of Saudeleur dynasty. In the center of Nan Madol lay the royal mortuary at the Islets of Nandowas. Wwater and food cannot be found in this place. Water used to be collected and food was grown on the land.
How these rocks got here is still a mystery. In the past, they do not have machines and equipment to use. Our history cannot be told to outsiders and they cannot give us the story with all the specific details and the ending. It was believed and is still practiced today, that if you give out the history of our ways and our traditions. You will either die or suffer consequences. History of our Island is sacred that is has to be told orally, they do not write down history.
That is why today, there is only one man on the Island who studied our history, he is Dr. Rufino Mauricio.

Long time
ago, two brothers came to Pohnpei, nobody knew where they came from. Their duty
was to build an altar, where they can perform their rituals. Their names were
Olosihpa and Olosohpa and they were very strong. They came here to Pohnpei and
landed on the island of Sokehs. They settled somewhere shoreside of Sokehs
called Ipwal. There they stayed for a long period of time. They have their own
crew which they brought along. Then they decided to start a special kind of worship.
In this worship, they would select one among themselves and he would be honored
to lead the people of Pohnpei. They then moved to Tupwendongalap, shore side of
Nett, to begin doing their work. But they did not find it suitable for work
because the waves are too rough and the current
is too strong. They then move from there to shoreside of Wenik (Wenik used to
be in Madolenihmw in the past, today it became part of Kitti). They re-did the
work again but still it was not good. From there, they went to shoreside of
Likin en Mwahn, in Madolenihmw. They prepared and planned the work for that
place, and again the place was not suitable for their work. Then one day,
Olosihpa and Olosohpa went to the mountains for roaming and looked out towards
the reef called Sounahleng. There was a city there named Kahnihmweiso. The
brothers thought this would be the best place for their work and they returned
to their people at the shore and had a moment of silent worship. They then went
to the shore of Sounahleng, on the outer part of Temwen and found the best
place for their work. In legend, these
brothers used magic to transport the stones to the island. There the two
brothers successfully completed their work. The place is now called Nan Madol.
